Undergoing a Kidney
Transplantation
at Sri Ramachandra Hospital
Sri Ramchandra Medical Center is
a leading 1500 bedded hospital located at Madras or Chennai. Approximately
80 Kidney Transplants are performed every year, mostly Live
related Kidney Transplants ( Kidneys donated by relatives ). Patients come from all over India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia,
Nepal and sometimes from as far as Italy and Canada.
Both live related and cadaver transplants are done.
However at present the number of live related transplants out-number
the cadaver transplant programme.
The cadaver transplants are done to help people
who do not have a relative to donate. In the western countries 90%
of all kidney transplants are done from such organ donors who have
what is called brain death - usually due to bleeding in the brain.
At our hospital we do at least 2 such transplants every month. The
patient is put on a waiting list and when their turn comes they
get the organ. Sometimes for a common blood group the waiting can
vary from 3 months to one year.
If you are interested you should come to the hospital
for a further discussion.
